So I know recently I talked about trying to decide about what to study in college, and I have it down to about to options. One being just a typical front desk person, and the other is an interior designer. The other day I was talking to a classmate and discussing how there was a lot of things I could do, and he asked me “but what do you really want to do?” and that struck me. Such a simple question that I know I have been asked before, but we emphasized the want so much that it struck me and really made me think about what I really wanted. Now what I really want to do is interior design, because I find it interesting, but what stopping me is my fear. You know that saying, or maybe there isn't one in particular, about how once you have to do something then it becomes less fun? That is the reason why I am worried. I find interior design fun, and I am worried if it becomes my job it will be less fun. Plus there are all the other things I mentioned in the blog post before (click here to read it). Although if I really love it, is there anything better than getting paid to do what you love? I mean I hear youtubers talk about it all the time, but YouTube is different from interior design. There was one YouTube video that changed my perspective on the matter, and it was s video by JacksGap. You can watch it here:
So if you don't feel like watching the whole video here is a quote that is the main message I got from it after watching.
" I ALWAYS MADE A LIVING TO MAKE MOVIES,
I NEVER MADE MOVIES TO TRY AND MAKE A LIVING.
AND I THINK THAT'S A BIG MISTAKE THAT A LOT OF NEWCOMERS
DO IS THEY FOCUS ON HOW CAN MY PASSION PAY ME? AND
I THINK THAT IS A TERRIBLE PLACE TO START.
IF THE REASON WHY YOU ARE DOING
ANYTHING CREATIVE IS TO MAKE A LIVING
THEN YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG."

Obviously you can see I underlined one part and that is the part that stud with me after I watched the video. I am not sure if it applies to me or not, but it has been sticking with me. I can see where he's coming from regarding movies, and even things like YouTube videos since people often start them just so they can have money and not because they like making videos. I am not sure if this applies to me only because interior design is a job that people have and I am not going into it just so that I can make money. I am doing it in the hopes that I can enjoy my job each day. I think that Casey has a very good point though, you should be working to fund your passions, not working your passions for funds. It still doesn't clear some of the doubts I have about interior design, but I think I will start taking the classes and if I hate them I will change.
